On this day 15th February 1882 the first shipment of frozen meat set sail from Port Chalmers aboard the 'Dunedin' for the 3 month voyage to London.
This is part of Totara Estate, where the first shipment came from, making it a significant part of New Zealand's history, the birthplace of the frozen meat industry.
This is the slaughterhouse and behind it the cooling shed. Every morning at 4am the carcasses were taken by cart to the railway siding and from there by steam train to Port Chalmers where they were frozen on board the Dunedin. It took almost a month of daily loadings for the ship to be fully loaded.
The slaughter house is a replica and the cooling shed is the original local limestone building.
Some interesting bits of old machinery in front.
I visited here last weekend and it is a pure coincidence that today is the anniversary. :) Taken with Panasonic DMC TZ60. Thank you for looking, I hope this is not too gruesome.
Your well documented narrative is accompanied by a very good image (or vice versa, ☺ ).
