One of my favourite country churches :)
I apologize for my lack of commenting the past few days - things have been a bit busy but I hope to soon be back on track :)

"The Anglican Church of St Andrews was built with funds donated to the community by Cyril Nichols, brother of Colonel Joseph Cowie Nichols, of Kuriheka fame. The church was designed by Christchurch architect Richard Harmon (1896-1953) from drawings made by Cecil Wood (1878-1947). It is built from locally quarried rock. c.1938
The West window is a memorial to the two sons, a brother and a cousin of Colonel Nichols who were killed in the First World War, and the east window was gifted by Cecil Teschemaker, in memory of his parents who were very early settlers of the district.
The church is outstanding for its oregon timberwork, oak joinery, limestone carvings, exterior modeling and its hand-made tile roof. It has an organ tucked away in the bell tower, which is very unusual and pieces of masonry from a number of the world famous cathedrals in England, as a link to the old country.
Services are still held here every Sunday.

Pretty much all the anglican churches I've seen have this same square and squat steeple, even here in the northern plains of the U.S. They're all clapboard here, though, many no longer used as a church but rather places for the locals to gather, and needing the attention (painting and carpentry) of the locals to keep from rotting away. None are as well built and beautiful as this one of yours, Lyn. This being New Zealand, I'm sure the soldiers were Anzacs in WWI, and quite possibly died at Gallipoli, that British blunder that caused the loss of so many boys from "down under."

Thanks for a fine photograph accompanied by a well written narrative, Lyn.
Thanks too for 'Nik' for his additional and interesting comment.
Without his comment I would have said that it's clearly a typical English church, but he prevented me from making this mistake, ☺.
Good 'wintry' (because of the bare trees) one!
