The flowers are called Vipers Bugloss (Echium vulgare}, part of the Borage Family. It grows wild in profusion. These were growing alongside the Waitaki River making a delightful blue & pink carpet.

In my country the Echium vulgare flowers are called 'slangenkruid' (snakes herb). See that the bee isn't impressed by this frightening Dutch name, Lyn, ☺ .
