Sailing away from Oahu for an afternoon of Whale Watching. Humpback Whales are an endangered species. In 1993 it was estimated there were only 6,000 in the North Pacific Ocean. This number has greatly increased now there is a ban on commercial whaling,to more than 21,000, 10,000 of which winter over in the waters around Hawaii.
I took dozens of photos. I'm not sure if the ones we were seeing were separate pairs or if they were playing hide and seek with us ! They are a magnificent sight to see and in the end I put away my camera and just enjoyed them.
To the right of the picture at the Eastern end of Waikiki Beach is Diamond Head State Monument, a volcano crater (760 feet high)that is one of Hawaii's most well known landmarks and a popular hiking site. It's Hawaiian name is Le'ahi.
