Spotted Dove(Spilopelia chinensis)- one of many I spotted in Honolulu.
Also known as the Mountain Dove, Lace-necked Dove or Spotted Turtle Dove, they have been cooing in Hawaii since the mid-1800's when they were introduced from Asia .
I have read they exist in New Zealand but they must be avoiding me because I am sure I have never seen any here :)

You spotted a spotted dove and have taken very good photo of him with the shadow. (I think it is a male).

I know them as turtledoves and I hear them cooing every so often in our trees near the lake.

The reason why the sun sets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB

It took some studying of the photo to determine that the dove's beak is not shovel-shaped but, rather, that's a curve in the edge of the leaf behind. We have mourning doves here in the northern plains and their soft cooing adds to their character as a pleasant bird, very non-confrontational... although my son, who learned to hunt them in Nebraska, just want to blow them out of the sky and cook 'em up. I'm working on him.
