Think you couldn't it approach any closer, MJ.
Can't see whether it's a hover fly or a bee. Think it's the first because it has only two wings. If so, it's not necessary to have fear for a sting.

I too wondered what it was, but looking at other shots of the same insect confirms that it is indeed a bee.
(I didn't actually know that there were Hoverfly's that resembled Bees, it's only by chance that I was looking at a insect ID website that I found out. Half a century old and still learning stuff!)
