It's an interesting shot, Cal. It does look like Birch bark. They have many layers of skin.
It's always worthwhile to add a bit of Sharpen to any digital image to return them to the camera-captured state. It's amazing how much is lost in transfer from camera/sensor to computer. The tonal range is also significantly reduced in compression and varies with the subject material.

Nice shot. I once saw a Yellow Bark tree in Tenn., looked something like this. Must be something when all of that comes off in the spring if it does. Good capture.
