The Matterhorn (German) or Cervino (Italian), (French: Mont Cervin or Le Cervin) is perhaps the most familiar mountain in the European Alps. On the border between Switzerland and Italy, it towers over the Swiss village of Zermatt and the Italian village Breuil-Cervinia in the Val Tournanche. The mountain derives its name from the German words Matte, meaning meadow, and Horn, which means peak. The Matterhorn was one of the last of the main Alpine mountains to be ascended, not because of its technical difficulty, but because of the fear it inspired in early mountaineers. The first serious attempts began around 1857, mostly from the Italian side; but despite appearances, the southern routes are harder, and parties repeatedly found themselves having to turn back. However, on July 14, 1865, in what is considered the last ascent of the golden age of alpinism, the party of Edward Whymper, Charles Hudson, Lord Francis Douglas, Douglas Robert Hadow, Michel Croz and the two Peter Taugwalders (father and son) was able to reach the summit from the Hörnli route in Switzerland. Upon descent, Hadow, Croz, Hudson and Douglas fell to their deaths on the Matterhorn Glacier, and all but Douglas (whose body was never found) are buried in the Zermatt churchyard.

That’s a magnificent chunk of rock. The tree seems to compliment it rather well too. I enjoyed you intro too.

It is always good when you go on vacation. Great photos and composition. Sometimes it is the angle of the photo that makes it more interesting.

I've seen lots of pictures of the Matterhorn--this is one of the best. Excellent composition--the tree branches/leaves is an excellent touch.

marvelous alpine scene. the green of the hills, the greys of the mountain and the blue and white of the sky are all the perfect shades. this angle selection is brilliant.

A breathtaking shot of one of Mother Nature's giant creations. Sharp color, great clarity, love the composition and pure contrast Paul. Quite tasteful and onto my desktop it goes as well as into my favorites.
Many thanks for the great history lesson as well as sharing this image with me :=)

I consider the Matterhorn one of the greatest sights in the world. There was a Disney movie made about a young mountaineer that wanted to conquer the mountain. I was just a kid when that was in the theaters, and I have loved the Matterhorn ever since. Fantastic shot, Paul.

One of the most beautiful images of the Matterhorn I've seen... it reminds me a little of a sleepy lion... pretty to look at but just wait till you get close to it!

Great colours and smart framing.
Matterhorn is not the highest, but it's the most impressive mountain in the world.
Been there, seen it and will never forget!

You must have rejoiced at seeing this grand mountain. And the photo you took of it just couldn't have been any better. How totally magnificent Paul!! I love the little clouds peeking from behing this mountain. When we think of the power it took to "make" this mountain...how it looms out of the Earth. Well, it sure makes a person feel very insignificant, and yet WE are here to see all these wonders. Thank you again Paul.Verena

What a magnificent mountain, and how lucky for you to view it in person!
The perspective is top notch - I like the 3D feel to this image.
Superb clarity, colours, and the "whole ball of wax".
Thanks Paul, for this quality piece of work :^>

I have been there, well as far as the Hornli Hut at the base of the mountain. My Dad climbed it (truth!!) in (I think), 1968. He went up with a guide who climbed it I don't know how many times. No accidents. Then the guide slipped in his bathroom and broke his leg.

It's just so beautiful there and I really like your photo of it.
