Colmar is a town and commune in the Haut-Rhin département of Alsace, France. And it has a tumultuous history. Colmar was founded in the 9th century. This was the location where Charles the Fat held a diet in 884. Colmar was granted the status of a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire in 1226. During the Thirty Years' War, the city was taken by the armies of Sweden in 1632, who held it for two years. The city was conquered by France under Louis XIV in 1697. In 1679 (Treaty of Nimwegen) Colmar was ceded to France. With the rest of Alsace, Colmar was annexed by the newly formed German Empire in 1871 as a result of the Franco-Prussian War. It returned to France after World War I, was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1940, and then reverted to French control after the battle of the "Colmar Pocket" in 1945.

Great idea for the shot through the gates. Fortunately for you, that bird also entered the frame as you shot this lovely church in a town of much history. Thanks for the background information.

The capture of the stork is the final touch of delight on a great cityscape image Paul. You are an inspiration.

Welcome in COLMAR and congratulation for this picture.
I will try to do the same at this place.
I hope you had time to take some other pictures from COLMAR.

I learned some facts reading your historic description.
But you forgot: "Colmar is also the Capital of Alsatian wine".

One stork? Maybe you ought to look a little closer, there are 4 storks in this picture. They breed on the church. Actually, they are all over Colmar and the near villages!
At one moment I saw three storks at the nest and 4 in the sky.
Not just me, about 20 other tourists were looking up as well.
Too bad for them, but I was the only one carrying the right lenses for the job.

If you can't find the words, you may as well shoot it...
