When there isn't anything nearby, it is hard to appreciate just how big this colorful fish is. Photo taken at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska. The markings on his side makes me want to trace the maze.
It always amazes me how Mother Nature comes up with such beautiful artwork on animals, fish, and reptiles, Jeff. This guy is such a pretty color - compared to wildlife, we humans are pretty plain and boring, aren't we?
Having gone to it free (in uniform), upon my graduation from Navy boot camp, the San Diego Zoo was my favorite zoo for many years. That is, until my wife and I visited the Henry Doorly in Omaha, back in 2005. I could have spent an entire day in the Lied Jungle and the 70-foot plexiglass walking tube in the Scott Aquarium and the reef exhibit with active surf were simply phenomenal. I had only a little 5mp Canon point & shoot camera and so my shots were only acceptable. This image of yours of a grouper (I think?), and the ray and puffer fish are excellent, considering you shot them through glass and I recall that area down there is a bit dim for cameras. The other part of the zoo that I found really special was in the bottom level of the jungle, on the way out, where the exhibit has caiman gators in with raccoons, and the shot I got was of a raccoon walking way down a log to tease the caimans. Do you know if that exhibit still exists, ten years later? I'm digging your photos and the walk down memory lane. Now I wanna go back!
If you've ever wanted to make a difference but found it hard to believe that one person could... check out the Kiva Team Caedes discussion thread and discover that anything is possible.
You are referring to the "Kingdoms of the Night" exhibit, which is under the Desert Dome. It is still there. Since flash photography is discouraged there because it can harm the animal's eyes, I don't usually get good photos from there, but I do enjoy strolling through it. Just about every year they add a new feature. Since you've been there it is the ape houses. They are working on a monstrous African exhibit right now.
