In the early 1900's the city of Omaha took advantage of a natural spring to create a public swimming pool; however, polio outbreaks created fears that the disease was spread through shared water and as a result the pool was closed and filled in with dirt in the 1940's. In the 1970's the zoo was looking to expand and discovered the buried pool. They dug it out, cleaned it up and it is now the sea lion exhibit.
