Continuing on uphill, we come to a cleft in the canyon wall that we have been following. To either side, steep stairs have been built to take us to the mesa, so we take the one to the left to go to a lookout point.
Spots like this are always inviting for me, leading me on but hiding the destination from view. A bit like driving a road in fog�even a familiar road�in which the fog thins to reveal the view ahead. I also find it reassuring that someone has put this much solid work into a place like this, out where it takes effort and skill to not just build these stairs but simply get the materials out here. So now I�m looking forward to the mesa.

There is a group of Mennonite and Amish teenagers who spend a month each winter at the state park's group camp. They exchange work, such as opening new trails, building and repairing bridges, etc., for that cost of using the cabins in the off-season. They do good work.
