Hazy, early morning light. 1/200s @ f/7.1, ISO 800. I've shot this 7-foot stand of lilies for three years running and this is the first image I've been pleased with. The urge to snatch a flower and run to a plainer background and position it at a more reasonable height has nearly driven me to botanical vandalism. As it is, I tip toe across a lawn shortly after dawn to a low brick wall and lunge over the top of it, trying for a better angle, clicking madly in hopes of one lucky shot. What draws me is the way the creamy borders of the petals seem to glow and the painterly quality of crimson blending into the cream. If I saw these lilies indoors, I'd assume they were fake.
