These are California poppies growing in a Maryland woodland garden, bright morning sun filtering down through the branches. (EXIF data's being held hostage on my recalcitrant HD.) I made the image in color, but the yellow of the petals was so uniform it blazed away the detail. In B&W, you can see a whole lot more here. Thanks for having a look.

Callie poppies are the most radiant colour, and sorry to say but I like their colours so much better then b&w. They are the "sun" where ever they grow. Verena

This series of B&W pictures of flowers have been inspirational. To capture the beauty of these living things beyond their gaudy colours is to see a side of nature overlooked by most. As you say, now you can see the structure so clearly. Wonderful.

So simply, but beautifully done. Love the lighting and shadow play you used.

Gaudy colours? Flowers are gaudy? Never may that happen. b&w has wonderful ways with many things. The creation you did is good,I just happen to love colours, that's why I do oil paintings too. And the great masters of art from long ago did many magnificent flowers.

Got this one in the VB and gave it high marks. One doesn't see that many b&w flowers ut I was pleasantly surprised at the detail and simplicity of shape here. Great shot.

I also got this one in the VB and gave it a high score. You did an amazing job with this macro. I really like the lighting on the flowers. The focus on the flowers is really clear, with good DOF. I'm curious though, Why so much empty space?

Oh thank you for such kind comments! Why the negative space? One reason was that it was "there." The image is full frame and I was as close to the poppies as I could get with this particular lens. The negative space is the leftovers. The other reason was that I tend to like greedily filling the frame with flower and yet often find the results to seem either claustrophobic once matted and framed or eye-crossing when on a monitor so close to the viewer. So then I back off for a while and try roomier compositions. I happened to shoot this in a back-off mood.

An outstanding shot! The lighting is just perfect and the details can be enjoyed against the negative space.
