I bought this sextant in the year 1961 second hand (made in 1925) in Cardiff. U.K. when I was a young 3rd mate. I didn't use it much because the ship's own sextants were more modern and easier to use than this sextant. Now it is a wall decoration at home :)

My entry for the contest.

For those who may not know: A sextant is an instrument used for measuring the altitude (height) of a star, planet or the sun measured from the horizon in degrees. The exact time is noted and this data is used for calculating the ship's position. We had no satellite navigators or GPS in those days.

Raj, I think this makes a perfect entry, good luck. I think it is so cool that you were able to purchase this neat instrument, some stories to be told behind that one. Tigs♥ =^..^=

Excellent entry for the contest, Raj. It seem I remember seeing one of these being used, but it was probably in a movie or on TV. Nice picture!

The brass bits look very well polished and I bet there is a lot of history to this item

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust
