This is a photo taken in 1979 when I took over as captain the newly built freighter called " Good Faith " at the shipyard Austin & Pickersgill, Sunderland, England (not far from where Richie and Bob live). The lady is the one who named the ship (swinging the champagne bottle) and the other person is the first officer.

I wish I was a Glow Worm, a Glow Worm's never glum, 'cause how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?

'Old Salts' in a charming company, Raj. (☺).

In my country, it was a baptismal custom that the baptist of the ship got a reward, after she had wished the captain and his crew a good voyage and a safe return. The reward was only symbolic, because she got an original 'rijksdaalder' (an original coin with the currency of two and a half Dutch guilder) and the little axe, with which she had cut through the rope that was fastened champagne bottle.

Good memories, my friend!

Sadly no longer a ship building location now..all industry like that has long gone!.........

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

"The rank insignia for a captain (N) is four 1/2-inch (1.3 cm) stripes, worn on the cuffs of the service dress jacket, and on slip-ons on other uniforms. On the visor of the service cap is one row of gold oak leaves along the edge. Captains (N) wear the officers' pattern branch cap badge.

The "(N)" is a part of the rank descriptor, and is used in official publications and documents to distinguish a captain (N) from a captain in the army or air force. It is also important to distinguish between the rank of captain (N) and the appointment of captain, meaning the commanding officer of a ship, regardless of his or her rank.

A captain (N) is addressed initially as "Captain Bloggins", thereafter by superiors and peers as "Captain" and by subordinates as "Sir" or "Ma'am". The "(N)" is not part of the spoken address."

This is for Canada.

But, seems to be the same for you, Raj?

That aside..

Nice to see an image from your own personal history.. Sir. :o)

I don't know what source you reproduced this from whether it be slide, negative or print but one thing's for sure chemical reaction hasn't degraded the the original quality.

Well done.

At first I briefly wondered who was who and then realized that with my own Naval background, I really should just look at the sleeves. Doh! (sound of my palm slapping my forehead)
