This gets first or second place from me out of the first eight in this series. Nice overall view -- we keep getting to see more and more of this. Keep 'em coming if you've still got more in your reserves.

I have a few more from that day ... about to move away from the falls though. The two falls shown, by the way, are within about 300' of one another. I'm anxious to return at the peak of the spring run-off to take some more.

This place looks very cold to me. Nice presenttion I still have my favorite but this would rank #2 in my book. This is a very difficult exposure to calaulate as you want motion of the water to be displayed. But not such a slow shutter speed to make it blurred enough to resemble the ice. Well done Rob! Was this a tripod mounted image capture? Hig Marks.

Annie and I invite you to visit our website. Photography is not a trade - it is an art. It is more that an art. It is a solar phenomenon, where the artist collaborates with the sun. deLamartine 1855

This must have been an inspiring scene in person. I can only imagine the thunder of the water and crunching of the ice! No photo can ever really convey the power, but you've come so close. Well done, Rob.

Thank you all for your comments on this shot. To answer your questions:

Fotobob: It was cold enough that the ice was still on the river preceeding the falls and quickly formed ice again below them. Far from the peak run-off but the river's still charged and full of life. Great observation on your part, I must say. A slow exposure would have done little in this shot other than producing more snow. I needed to take it fast to come close to capturing the undulating splash from the surge. Shot freehand (further to the need for a fast shutter!)

beansbond: It was a marvelous scene in person. A location that I'm anxious to return to at the peak run-off in early spring.

Cheers and thanks for the feedback.

This is a true cap to the series; interesting you should leave the overall composition for last! I really enjoyed this series, and with this image in particular feel the cold. Any filter work in the upper half? Anyway, many thanks.

Ned Knott was shot and Sam Shott was not. So it is better to be Shott not shot than Knott shot, is it not?

I applied a black opaque gradient to the upper half to screen down the image.

I thought the buildings were necessary for context but I wanted to cast the viewers eye more to the falls.

This is my favorite in this series. I agree with June re the power in the water. I imagine the thundering of it. I also like the odd shape of that ice cap by the sleuce. :)

The subject is really really interesting, so much happening there and it raises all kinds of curiosity. (Why is there water gushing out of the foundations of a house?) The severe conditions only add to the interest and the way you've captured it all is excellent.
