Sorry about the size and quality. I forgot to put the desktop version on the laptop that I use to access the internet... anyway, this is the echidna that lives around the property I moved into about three weeks ago. I have seen him three more times since. This is a big thrill for me, kind of like finding a bald eagle nesting in your backyard if you live in the USA. Echidnas are the only mammals in the world besides the platypus that lay eggs. They also has a pouch, like a kangaroo, but the baby echidna leaves the pouch fairly early (before it's spines get too long I hope!) When it hatches it is about the size of a jellybean. Hope you enjoy.

I did research about your 'friend' and the history is quite interesting Sam! If you are happy that this Echidna lives with you then so am I! :)
The picture is quite good of what sounds like an elusive mammal!
It reminds me of an anteater......great to see an image of yours again Sam.
I really like the out of focus foliage on the right. It adds a sense of even more mystery to this character....rather reminds me of someone sneaking around a corner to shoot a picture!
Good job.
To my favorites folder you new friend goes :=)

Thanks Mimi! It does indeed eat ants, termites mainly. And I did have to sneak up on it, they are quite small and when you get too close they just bury themselves in the dirt leaving only their spines exposed (as this one did shortly after I took this).

They lay eggs you say ... that is amazing. At first I thought it was something similar to a porcupine. I have never heard of an 'echidna' before ... he / she sure it cute & those spines look might sharp. Love it's long snout too.

Sam ... wonderful capture & thank you for sharing your backyard friend. I learned something new today. :-)

The size of a jelly bean??!~! Wow.It looks just like a Hedgehog to me...it isn't the same thing? I saw a Hedgehog when I was in London years ago..and then I saw one at the Portland Zoo. But I wonder if they had the wrong name for it at the zoo. I love this little photo tho. I love the Platy and I know he's very elusive. So this little guy is too eh?! This is so very interesting. I'm so glad you were able to see him often enough to take his picture.Thanx so much Sam!! Verena

Both the monotremes are on my photo "list" but I've not managed to snag one yet. You got a beauty here, a precious image of a precious animal, well done:)

The only reason that I know of this animal is because it was the character "knuckles" in the Sonic and Knuckles video game. =)

Thanks for the peek at this interesting animal. I hope you don't inadvertently step on it's spines one day.

As Verena mentioned, it looks very much like what we call the hedgehog, though perhaps the snout is more pronounced...anyhow, nice capture and perhaps we'll see more of him as he roams about your property...maybe even some little Echidnas some time...thanks for sharing.

I saw these in Melbourne (at the zoo!) and could not remember what they were called. How amazing to have them living wild near you. We only get hedgehogs!
Good one ! :)

Is the Echidna the same as a Porcupine or a Hedgehog? They look the same to me. One is smaller then the other tho. They have a very small one here at the Portland zoo. I am so happy to see you post this, it's totally awesome for sure. Thank you so very much. Verena
