I wanted to create something for the Art Deco contest, since it is a favourite style of mine, but since I have little time I am going with this edit of a photo I took in the lobby of the Empire State when I visited last year. I had to do a fair bit of manipulating to get this end result, and I am still not really happy with it (the photo was taken with a new video camera, I didn't discover how poor the quality was at full res. until I got home) but it certainly fits the genre and I think would be quite nice to see for those who haven't visited.

BTW I did look into it and it appears that images of the building are not subject to intellectual property or copyright laws... just in case anyone was wondering...

The "stamped/etched metal" feel to this is what I'd started out wanting to create when I began working on my entry. Wound up being something else though, but this style, for me, is the epitome of "art deco", especially in architectural terms. I'm just wondering if a bit more contrast might've given this more "texture"?

I admire the Empire State building very much but for some reason the frame bothers me...Maybe more frame at bottom and higher at the spire top. Well that is just my option other then that it is a wonderful art deco piece..best of luck in the contest.

I can only concur with those above, very nicely done indeed, and if I had the time it would be back to the drawing board re: my little entry after seeing this...good luck, or perhaps I should offer my congratulations in advance, lol.

I wasn't wondering about the copyright because the same holds true for images of my state's capitol structure. Whereas many (but not all) of the current entries in this contest have nothing to do with Art Deco, this one certainly does. Even the rays of light pouring forth from the beacon at the top (actually a mooring post for dirigibles, and used at least once for that job) is classic Art Deco styling. In the past I have had an image I wanted to use but the quality wasn't quite there, using filters on it to create a "painting" of it often does the trick. In thumbnail form I wondered about the focus but upon enlargement it makes sense. Good luck in the contest, Sam.

I've considered putting this sideways so I can use it as a desktop, but that's silly, of course. This is a WONDERFUL edit of the icon of icons in the Art Deco world.

Oh, and: when I downloaded it in the largest size possible I see you've done some Photoshop work. What filter(s) did you use?

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Missed this one completely, although I've seen the actual plaque many times over in the atrium of the building itself... It is clearly from the art deco era inside and out! Nice post...Faved!
