Officer Down. That is a policeman's worse nightmare to hear come over the radio as they do their patrols.

I really don't know what to say or how to say it, but the city I work for lost one of our own. First officer killed in our 45 year history.

So next time you feel hassled by being stopped for that heavy foot on the pedal, instead of complaining and being upset, why not thank your officer for putting his life on the line daily so you can be safe.

Pelham Officer Slain

"A Part of America Died"

Somebody killed a policeman today,

and part of America died.

A piece of our country he swore to protect,

will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,

with counsel demanding his rights.

While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,

and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,

just as if he'd gone off to war.

Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,

to his name they will add a gold star.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,

in your town or mine.

While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,

a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,

and he stands at each new rookie's side.

He answered the call,

of himself gave his all,

And A Part of America Died.

The good ones (The vast majority) deserve our respect in every country. You only need to look at nations that cannot rely on their police force's to understand what a difference the good one's make to our lives.

Paul, This is done so well and is a great tribute to this officer. They do put their lives on the line even in small town mid America. One just never knows. Very thoughtful tribute and narrative. We had a terrible story here in Warsaw some years ago. I won't go into detail, but it was very sad. =^..^=Sandi

Another example of why we need a photo/journalism gallery Opie. A great tribute and you did it so well. A policeman never knows what he is facing when he approaches a car. I know.

That is really sad, Paul. It is especially gut wrenching when an officer is murdered. Thanks for sharing.

I felt chills when I heard about this on the radio that day. It is always a worry for our police, deputies, and officers upholding the law, just as it is our soldiers overseas. My heart goes out to his family and his fellow officers and to everyone in Pelham for this tragic loss.

Perfect dedication and capture Paul. It's a somber shot and so moving. Wonderful. Pittsburgh lost 3 officers in April during a domestic dispute and just recently 1 more over 50$ and drugs. My heart goes out to all law enforecement officers and their families. Ami
