This splendid metallic beast adorns the wall of the Golden Lion pub in St Ives. At full screen you may just make out the reflections of the landlady, a customer or two and your humble photographer...
Wow, I could analyze this for some time! I see about nine people...may be just more of the same person. The guy with the grey hair stands out best just under the lions upper lip. Looks to be a pool table on the left. Is this made from copper or bronze, Simon? Good eye:-)
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." Bertrand Russell
Thank you both :-) Darryl, I do have rather more grey hair than you'd expect in one of such tender years (ha!) but I didn't see myself 'til long after I'd spotted some other figures, so full marks for observation. Although as there isn't a pool table you lose all the marks again.... I believe it's bronze - in real life it's too yellow for copper. Matt, they don't serve St Austell ales, but whether that counts against them or for them is a matter of taste ;-) They do keep an excellent pint of Courage Best if you're after a good quaffing ale, and usually one or two other brews as well.
yeah wicked, i like it much. thanx for capping this its very surreal image, the lion looks amazing, the eyes are almost real but it looks cg as well. wicked : )
The eyes have done it for me in this photo as well Simon. Lions have always had a very powerful impression on me and in many ways this is a reflection to me of that. I admit fear yet they command my respect for the majestic creature they are.
As I was going to St. Ives
I met a man with seven wives.
Every wife had seven sacks,
Every sack had seven cats,
Every cat had seven kits.
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were going to St. Ives?
Just a lil rhyme that pops into my mind each time someone mentions about St Ives. The highlights & the various metallic tones liven up this ornament really well. The king of beasts in brass doesnt appear anything less than regal, does it? :-) Nifty shot, Simon. So erm, how many were going to St Ives? :-)
Thank you, Jack and Jill. (Hmmm - reminds me of another lil rhyme there Jill lol). I shan't spoil your game for anyone who wants to work out the answer... ;-)
i gotta say, this is one of those images i like smaller better. i downloaded the 800x600 for my 1152 screen, because its too grainy full size, and loses the sharp contrasts that give it the apeal. i really love the carving tho
