Draynes Wood, at the southern edge of Bodmin Moor, where the head-waters of the River Fowey cascade over the rather grandly-named Golitha Falls. These are actually rapids rather than a waterfall, but picturesque nonetheless :-) 5th February '05.

Picturesque was the word. :) Really nice scenery you caught here. The highlights are a bit on the bright side for me but you know how it is. You can't make everyone 100% happy about everything. ^_^

Thanks Klas :-) I'll agree with you on the highlights - the contrast between the sunlit areas of water and the shaded areas of woodland was just too great for one shot to expose both correctly. I think this one was a reasonable compromise ;-)

I know the problem. Some shots are just too hard to get perfect. Maybe it would have worked with a slight underexposure but on the other hand the shadows could have become to dark and too much details could have been lost. Like you said you made a reasonable compromise. :)

Very nice woodland scene. Looks a bit like the area that bursts into bloom with tiny flowers in the spring.

Nicely done. The water looks feathery. Did you use a fast shutter speed?

This type of shot is always a challenge and you came out achieving it big time! What I like most is the diagonal composition of the stream and how it spills into the foreground. Very nice Simon:-)

But words are things, and a small drop of ink, falling, like dew, upon a thought produces that which makes thousands, perhaps millions think and smile. Art is everywhere, except it has to pass through a creative mind.

Very nice shot. The "compromises" are excellent. So good, in fact, that nothing less than 10 can be given.

Hey, Simon .. first, .. great shot .. I personally can't get enough of this combination .. woods+water.

Second ... there is software that handles extremes in exposure .. I've never used it .. examples page ---> Photomatix

maybe not for this image .. but there will be others

Lovely lighting and composition. I really like how you place the stream in the image...it makes a very pleasing set of diagonal lines, really carries the eye into the background and gives a sense of depth.

This is such a lovely image. The bright highlights really don't detract from it much at all. I really like the moss covered rocks at the waters edge and agree that the angle of the shot is really pleasing.

Thank you for such lovely comments :-) Yes, Pierre, I apply unsharp mask to practically every shot, as they come out of the camera a little "soft". This one is also cropped to improve the composition, and the tone map adjusted to bring out the detail in the shaded areas. If I were doing it again I'd probably also use the clone tool to put a little detail back into the overexposed highlights - there are one or two areas of water which are "whited out", but that's how they came out of the camera so a little "cheating" would be needed there ;-)

I hold it true that thoughts are things; They're endowed with bodies, breath and wings: And that we send them forth to fill the world with good results, or ill. That which we call our secret thought speeds forth to earth's remotest spot, leaving it's blessings or it's woes like tracks behind it as it goes. We build our future, thought by thought for good or for ill, yet know it not. Yet so the universe was wrought . Thought is another name for fate. Choose then thy destiny and wait, for Love brings Love and Hate brings Hate. - Henry Van Dyke.
