The photo shows the "energy flash" when a projectile launched at speeds up to 17,000 miles an hour impacts a solid surface at the Hypervelocity Ballistic Range at NASA's Ames Research Center. This test is used to simulate what happens when a piece of orbital debris hits a spacecraft in orbit. Image Credit: NASA (I found this on in the NASA archive)

I saw this a while back and was immediately hugely sceptical of it. For one thing - they already know what happens when a hyper velocity object hits something in orbit - it happens all the time and many satellites have been damaged like this and subsequently repaired by shuttle missions. Looks a lot more like rail gun testing to me but that’s just the sceptical side of me that disapproves of the militaries meddling in NASA affairs but then if that were the case they wouldn’t really be showing you photos of it I guess.

Sorry for not saying what it was that I liked about it earlier...

It is not something you normally see. At first, I thought that it was a render. The fact that it isn't really boosts the score. The colors are so unnatural! Scientific things are always interesting to look at, and this appears to be super cutting-edge research that would be hard not to be facinated by. Awesome post.

stuffinstuff is right: it looks like a render, but the fact that it isn't makes this breath-taking! Science, Photography, and a not so obscure movie reference. Well done. Very well done.
