Space Shuttle Discovery hitched a ride on a special 747 carrier aircraft for the flight from California to the Kennedy Space Center, Fla., on August 19.

when it's on the runway it looks so ungainly like it would never get off the ground but in flight it makes for a beautiful image. never get tired of seeing that. thanks for posting a fitting end to the Discovery mission.

I had never noticed the cone over the thrusters on the shuttle before. Have they always done it that way when it's returned via the 747, or is it relatively new?
The shuttle is really starting to show its age. Wish NASA would design and build a new, more modern one.
