Wish I could do the nice job Rob does with his older photos, but this is a little work I did on my mothers photo, taken when she was 14 years of age.

This has it's own particular charm, Carol, but I think I would have given her just a touch of sharpening. Just a touch. It would still be your mom's portrait, but the very fact that you colorized it in this artistic manner would allow for sharpening without compromising yourself or the photo.
