You either have one very long telephoto lens, an excellent vantage point, or a very steady sense of balance to take a photo like that. ;) I like the way you've captured the moment, especially with the one guy holding his hand over his face. Makes me wonder what he was thinking at that moment. "They said it was a three hour tour... Where's that Dramamine?" ;)
Its good to see another of your masterful nautical shots Steb. This one is so full of action, the spray flying over the boat, the crewman hanging on with what looks like a death grip, the looseness in one of the sails all add up to one very dynamic image.

You've got to tell us how you do this. If I'm on a boat in the same waters shooting at that craft, I'm hanging on with all my apendages and I'm afraid for my camera too! You got a great shot, I see the next swell coming right behind it.
Thanks everyone, no big secret. I was shooting with a 100-400 zoom with a Canon 10 D, which makes it a 160-640 zoom. This shot was taken with the lens at 200mm so effective focal length 320mm, f6.7, 1/1000th. I was on the Southern Peninsula Rescue Boat, which is a bit smaller that the yacht I was shooting (probably 22-25 ft). It was "quite " rough and I was bracing myself against the wheelhouse most of the time, but I've got used to moving with the boat and I wear a big towel aroung my neck to wipe off any spray.
The only time I have ever fallen off (with all my gear!!) was on a big boat, at anchor in a flat calm. Doesn't make much sense. All the gear now replaced - same lenses and a 20D.
"What other reason could there be to get up in the morning except to set ourselves free."
If my comment on your work ever seems to criticise, it does not. It is always so that we may learn together.
Steb;
Oh to be that young again! To hang onto a wheelhouse in seas that high and still have the ability to capture images as great as this one is truly amazing. I have looked at your gallery and found a wonderful mix of images. You have a good eye and much talent.

I came back.. and I saw this one too. WOW. What kind of boat were YOU in, in order to take these amazing boat shots. The folks on the other boat look like they are clining on for dear life, so it made me wonder how you might be able to take a picture without washing overboard :-)))
