On the banks of the Acheron river in Epirus, Greece, this site was believed by devotees to be the door to Hades, the realm of the dead. The faithful came here to talk with their dead ancestors. Homer provides the earliest reference in his Odyssey. This was quite remarkable to see and experience, I truly wish I had a better camera and the skills to use it. Not sure if this would qualify for the upcoming contest, but thought it would be of interest. Appreciate views and comments.

I think you did just fine and it would make a good entry for the contest Kathy.
You did well with the available lighting. Wonderful textures.
Good luck should you choose to use it in the contest.

Vicki, your information is not quite accurate for we all know that the true door to hell is the one that leads into my dentist's office!

I think you have a masterly picture here, rich in color, detail, and history. Should you decide to enter it, I wish you all the best. I for one think you have a winner.

lol...I had to laugh at John's comment about his dentist office...but that aside, I think this is a fine capture with a fascinating narrative...it would make an excellent contest entry, Vicki.

This is a great entry. There are aspects of history that we rarely see and are never taught.

Vicki, by reading your narrative, I like to say that, because of the difficult lighting conditions, to me you've achieved the best possible result, so there's nothing wrong with your photographic skills and camera!

Very interesting post (both image and narrative) and a good contender for the current contest as well.

If you would decide that this will be your entry, I wish you Good Luck with it.

PS: I'm still laughing by the first lines of John's hilarious comment above!
