I've lived in this area for most of my life and I've never seen a cluster like this. Maybe I've never paid attention before but this day-hike I did. I thought it was beautiful. It's a type of pine tree but I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what type of pine. Most immature cones on pine trees are green so I am stumped!

Judging by the needles, I'm leaning more toward a Douglas Fir. Sometimes the tree's environment can make a change in how it grows. In the badlands of North Dakota, whenever a vein of coal is slowly burning underground, it cooks the clay above and below it, turning the clay into the red "scoria" you've seen in some of my shots. There is an invisible gas released by the burning coal, however, that has an effect on the nearby pine trees that can last for many years. Instead of the bushy look these cedar trees normally exhibit, new trees growing in the vicinity of that coal gas grow columnar instead. In southwest ND, near the town of Amidon, there is a scenic spot, designated so because of the landscape and the effects of this gas:

Is there anything in the immediate area, where you took this photo, Janelle, that could account for the color of these buds? Or perhaps there is a member who is a botanist, who has a more informed explanation? I like shots like this that make me think (even if it is a holiday and thinking is not a requirement :). Thanks for submitting it.

What a unique and beautiful little bunch of pinecones! It is just wonderful to see something so different. I hope somehow you can find out something about them. They have such an interesting shape and colour, and the way you got the photo, with the cones nestled in the pine needle branch, its just fantastic. Bravo on this find!! --Verena

Hi Janelle
This is either a Ponderosa Pine which you see all over the place out east there or a black pine which makes sense with that bloom!Ponderosa Pines usually just have one cone but this one looks to be putting out several whick leads me to think Black Pine! Anyway it beautiful! Great clear shot!

Going out on a limb here, looks like a red pine tree. Nice capture, good clarity and colour in your shot.
