Late December, I decided to explore Bennett Bayou on one of the less cold afternoons. Since the White Pelicans stopped by, as well as very high waters from record rains.... it seemed the residents were behaving unusually. I haven't noticed pelicans at this bayou before.... it startled me by trying to land and balance on a narrow limb overhead a walkway I was standing on. This dead looking tree is one of two that several flocks of pigeons normally roost. After my surprise following his large shadow, dawned on me I should move before that limb breaks. I thought he looked a bit prehistoric in this position. Oddly he managed to situate himself and stayed there until I left the bayou. ( Edit: I apologize for the black line in the bottom, I cropped it after resizing and didn't notice the partial frame left behind until now.)

You hit the Pelican on the head with the prehistoric comparison E~. What a great shot. I would have moved for other reasons as well. :)

Yeah....at first I though you had captured the dreaded Pterodactyl. That is a great shot of the Pelican. I love the way he has his wings spread, and it looks great against the sky. Very nice work, E.

Liz, it does look very prehistoric. Maybe something our ancestors once ran from ;) Such excellent detail in the wings/feathers. And that face, WOW!

What a chance to be able to take a very rare photo. Heavy guy on the top of a dead tree wow...and look at that face, he for sure looks like he flew directly from a different time period!
What an outstanding photo. It must be wonderful to be able to "lurk" around these birds and get them on photos. You do such an excellent job. I like this very much. Verena

He sure does look prehistoric from this vantage point! But I am with Tick...it's not the limb I would be worried about falling on me!! LOL :) Steve

It's a beautiful and very unusual shot, Elizabeth, of the underside of his wings like this. Normally a view like this is taken while they're in flight and seldom this sharply focused. I was going to mention the possibility of a falling limb not being what I would worry about, but it appears that Steve beat me to it.
