From the Tide Pool

Taken the same day as the Reddish Egret, the tide pool was especially active. When I arrived there were only a few birds. I inched my way slowly around it, keeping a wide berth so I wouldn't disturb them. Even though there was a lot of rain in March, by the end of April there was an unusually dry period. I was very concerned to see the popular feeding area shrinking drastically. Slowly I inched my way closer eventually there were eight Great Blues a Tri-colored Heron, a Reddish Egret and numerous Gulls, Plovers etc... It was interesting to watch the group interact. The smaller Tri-colored seemed unaffected by the larger birds going about his fishing around and in between what was turning into a large group. Often the Great Blues would posture and balk at each other seemingly fussing over their positions. Feathers ruffled and several would be run off and slowly return. All the while they didn't appear to have a problem with the smaller egret and heron often following them it seemed to find fish.

Elizabeth - The ruffled feathers indicate either a standoff or a overuse of the feather spray in the am. The clarity of the photo show the colorful plumage beautifully. Hopefully, the tide pool will be replenished soon and food will about for all the birds. Thad

The ruffled feather look is something you don't see too often. I think it looks great. Seems to add a little motion to the shot. You have captured one of my favorite birds beautifully. E. Very nice.

Very nice! I like this reddish accents on this fellow. He looks like he has someplace to go and intends to get there. Is he ruffling his feathers or is it the wind? Great shot!

I didn't realize they could ruffle their feathers. I thought they were too laid back. Just goes to show everything has its breaking point.

What a gorgeous shot and I really liked the narrative. I was very quiet afraid I would scare them away.

It's hard to convince myself sometimes, looking at the eye of this stately bird, that he's busy scanning the water for movement of any kind, an efficient fisher. Your usual outstanding capture, Elizabeth. I would like to think that you have a file on your computer of the very few lesser-quality photos you may have taken in the past, the ones you don't care to submit, to remind yourself that not everything works the first time. I have one of those junk files. It's a big 'un. I'd bet there'd be room for a dozen or more copies of your junk file in my one junk file. :D

Oh Elizabeth, this bird is just magnificent! I love the two
areas that show the feathers, kind of like two ballerina skirts! Just gorgeous!! I love how the 'neck' one goes one direction and the 'body' one goes another! It would be just awesome to be able to watch these birds as you did. What a wonderful thing to be able to do. That's one thing in Oregon we don't seem to have much of. Maybe it's just the area around Portland, since there is so much going on. But we do have great Roses and flowers and Hummingbirds. I just love how you wrote telling about when you were watching this area. I could almost feel as tho I was with you! Thanx so very much for a most lovely photo. Verena
