The Gothic pile & World Heritage Site that is the 11th century Durham Cathedral, set on a hill overlooking the city and the river Wear. The interior of the Cathedral is stunning, but there is a total camera ban in place so I won't be able to convey in images the sense of awe it inspired in me. Hope you like it.

Why the camera ban ?!
This is against democratic principles.
I think Jerome K. Jerome mentioned the cathedral in his 'Three Men on a Boat to say nothing of the dog'.
Being a rebellious Polish native I would enter the cathedral with:
1. my dog
2. my camera
and spend some months in UK jail ..... LOL

Yep. cameras are often banned in the most interesting places places in the world. At least you were allowed inside, and got this shot outside. Nice one, and a keeper!! Welcome back.

In reply to the queries as to why the camera ban inside the cathedral, I have pasted this in. This is the official line. "...Durham Cathedral's's primary purpose is to be a Christian place of worship. As such, the Chapter feel that it is inappropriate for photography to take place within the sacred space itself. Many of our visitors come here as pilgrims and spend time in quiet thought and prayer. We do not consider that they should be disturbed by photography taking place. Equally, the Chapter believes that anyone who comes to the Cathedral should be able to do so in the knowledge that they will not be included in someone else's photographs...."
I first suspected that the ban was to preserve ancient tapesties etc from flash photography, but obviously not.

I was just going to say that I am reading Connie Willis' time-travel science fiction book "To Say Nothing of the Dog", which references Jerome K. Jerome. Gothic "pile" indeed! It is totally beautiful and strong. Too bad you couldn't get a pic of the tapestries, but I agree---one should be free of being photographed while praying and meditating. I like the angle of this pic...with the weir on the right (it is a weir, yes?) and the bridge on the left....the eye moving naturally from high right to lower left.
