This is one of those pictures I have been hesitant about posting for a while. What you can see are memorial statues in Okunoin Cemetery, the largest in Japan, dedicated to babies and young children by their parents. In Japan, popular belief holds that a hideous creature by the name of Shozuka-no-Baba strips children of their clothing, then forces them to make piles of stones to build a stairway to paradise. The Japanese in the countryside often attach small pieces of children's clothing to the statues, believing that Jizo [a god] will clothe the children in his protection. Your comments, as usual, are welcome.

I, for one, think it is a beautiful picture that represents beautiful sentiments. As a novice I can't really comment on the quality of the picture, but it touched my heart which to me is the true measure of success.

Your shot is nice because of the angle you used. I also made photos about these little sculptures to show here to my friends what's the way how Japanese believe. I could see in Tokyo that they put also feeding bottles and comforters in front of them. Where is it? I have never seen so much together.

From the thumbnail, I thought you had done some PS work on a B&W image. Seeing this full size, the enormity of the parents grief is almost overwhelming. A very good photo and thanks for sharing the customs of another country.

Much of the beauty in life is found in people who care.
