Went to Watergate park today,Doreen went shopping to Durham with my daughter and Grandaughter,First time out for her for a while as she's a little under the weather..Watergate park is a lovely area,Where once the Watergate Colliery stood..My father was a miner and so was Doreen's,They used to be called "Hewers",As they Hewed the coal from the coal face,Some only 18" deep,Working with only a small lamp on their helmets..Watergate park has erected some sculptures to these brave unsung heroes and this is one of them..Looking at this with the spider and web,I suppose it symbolises what has been and is no more,The helmet discarded for so long a spider has made it's home there..Strange how a simple piece of sculpture can invoke so many memories....R.

What a fine memorial sculpture and you made it into a really wonderful memento with the poem, colors and light. It is a very heart wrenching poem when you think that the men did this work to feed their families knowing that every day their lives were in great peril. I had to look up colliery because I had never heard that word before. Even today, men and boys in S. American mines still do this work and here too. It is frightening to hear of a mine collapse, yet for many, it is the only job they have ever known. So well made, Richie, is this memorial to such good men.

Well shot, thought out and presented Count B.
It is a very emotional post. I see it has been nominated for the AC which is where it belongs.
The ray of light was a stoke of genius. The narrative excellent.

Outstanding post Richie! A great tribute to the miners. We have a lot of coal mines in neighboring states like Kentucky and West Virgina. I can't imagine my loved ones below ground like that and it is a scary time when you hear about a mine collapsing. I know I have prayed a many of night when news was broadcast of miners trapped.

It is a very emotive sculpture and very well taken.
The poem adds a lot to the image.

Made me again remember the 29 men who lost their lives almost a year ago in NZ in the Pike River mine disaster. It is hoped that it will be safe enough for a team to enter and recover those brave men by Christmas. For the sake of their grieving families I hope so.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Nice capture, I like the way the light beam is coming from the lamp on the helmet.. my dad was a miner from the time he was 16, the stories he used to tell about deep down in the mines.. they were definately the unsung heroes.. love the poem too, it all fits perfectly
