Nelumbo nucifera is native to South Asia. It is cultivated as food and ornamental plant in tropical climates. At the west side of Echo Park in Los Angeles the acre-wide lotus bed blooms every summer and this event is the centerpiece of the city-sponsored Lotus Festival, a two-day event in the month of July. Here the lotus flower opens up to reveal a yellow-colored core which turns to green when mature. It is actually a seed pod, the seeds can be prepared and cooked and added in some Asian delicacies. More lotus pics coming up.

Terrific macro Joe with beautiful color and clarity and the lighting is magnificant. Are the seeds good when cooked? Excellent post.

Sometimes you trust someone who turns out not to be honest. There are a lot of things that happen in life that don't turn out the way you're given the impression that they will. And I think that's all kind of a con. But I think we've probably all been hurt. Sigourney Weaver

I love the soft lighting and the way the flower seems to float above the background. Excellent shot!

Luminous, breath-taking. The color, the angle showing off the pretty shapes, the lighting, the floating effect, everything about this is pure artistry.

I thought Dean "raiden747" might have closed the book on lotus photos with his recent contribution, but there's no doubt that this one will soon take its place right along side his.

One of the highest scores around. I can see why. Great capture. The level of detail and colour balance makes it just that bit better then so many other good macro flower shots.

I'm a little late to the party, but wanted to add my kudos to the list.

A truly gorgeous composition. Almost sculpted in it's perfection.
