The Ferstel Palace is the youngest of the three palaces at ”Freyung“. The Viennese “Ringstraße”-architect Heinrich von Ferstel created this prestigous building between 1856 and 1860, whose style includes elements of the Venetian Florentine Trecento-architecture as well as “Werksteinbau” elements.
This fact caused a lot of stir during this period – the palace was considered as the most modern building of Vienna. The Big “Ferstel” Hall, marked by its Roman-Historic style, is dominating. Also the Arcade Yard, uniting different architectural styles, offers a special atmosphere to the visitor. The architecture is reminiscent of the typically Italian Palazzi buildings. Among other things, the Ferstel Palace housed the Stock Exchange of Vienna, the Austrian-Hungarian Library and Café Central. The palace has also been recently renovated. In addition, there is a posh shopping arcade, which is the connection between “Freyung” and Herrengasse.
