Construction approval of today's beloved tourist attraction was granted in 1872; however, financial difficulties delayed construction by 17 years. The Schafberg Mountain Steam Train was officially opened to the public on August 1, 1893. The train departs from St. Wolfgang (542 meters above sea-level). The Schafbergspitze station is situated on the Schafberg's summit 1,732 meters above sea-level. Only five of the six original steam locomotives designed by Roman Abt and distributed by Krauss & Co. are still in operation today, since one was transferred to the Schneeberg Mountain Railroad. The original passenger cars are still in operation, each with enough seating capacity to accommodate 60. Today almost 225,000 holiday-goers purchase tickets for the Schafberg Steam Train yearly.
