Let me introduce you to the wonderful Port Sunlight on The Wirral opposite Liverpool. Port Sunlight is a garden village started in 1888 by William Hesketh Lever to house the workers in his near-by soap factory and named after the main product Sunlight Soap. He was very forward thinking for the time and had 30 architects design 900 houses plus many other amenities. For more information please click HERE. Each block of houses was designed by a different architect in a different style which gives the village much of its charm. This is a picture of one such block.

How spooky I was looking at a book about him in the library the other day with a view to lending it. Think it was called "King of Sunlight. I have always been interested in him,, what he did for his staff was amazing. We touched on him in history at school. Port Sunlight is an amazing place, and a great testimony to as you say a forward thinking employer. I am going to the library tomorrow now :)

Great site you sent us to with that link and this is a most interesting story I had not heard of before. I find it wonderful that there are people in the world, or people who were in the world that think/thought of their legacy to the community at large over and beyond what the bottom line was as to how much money they could make. Making a difference in people's lives, to my way of thinking, would be much more rewarding, but then you should see my bank account :(

Love take of this block of houses.

"I never looked for it, gave it no name; yet I knew it always, when the gift of peace came. I stood quite still for the moment that it lasted...Then the light shifted slightly and the moment passed, leaving me...with the lasting echo of its presence.." Diana Gabaldon

I've never seen Port Sunlight Steve, and as a housing professional I was fascinated by the link. You captured this house in great detail - my only wish would have been for more interest in the sky and better light. But it's quintessential England, and well documented!
