Here's the problem, how do you get fully loaded 70ft long barges up the 50 ft between The River Weaver and The Trent and Mersey Canal when you can't build a flight of locks? The answer is easy; you build The Anderton Boat Lift. This wonderful structure was built in 1875 and brilliantly provides the solution to the above problem. If you would like to try it out then click HERE. The small town of Northwich in Cheshire has built a wonderful nature reserve an country park around The Lift, the canal and the river. On the other side of the river stands the giant chemical works on which Northwich's fortunes are based.

Steve thanks for this wonderful and very interesting image.
Like to say however that the principle of a Boat Lift is not new. My Belgian Caedes-friend Hubert (Magicpic) has posted about one year ago a lot of images of Boat Lifts as well. The only difference is that your image depicts an English one while his series depicted several Belgian ones.
In both cases it's wonderful to see how inventive peope already were that time. Very well done!
Regards, Cornelius.

She was a great builder in her time warn't she!...

There are lot of engineering masterpieces scattered all over the world that owes their everlasting longevity to the master craftsmen of those days!...

Thanks for this pal...a great post!

Big brother's watching you :o) A mistreated dog should try to leave a deposit on their masters best carpet, after all it's important to establish who's boss ... My gallery is here.

this is a great shot indeed! I have passed this lift a few times but never had a chance to ride it. I enjoyed the link very much. I like the way you have taken this, with the trees acting as a frame.

I can't quite make out how that boat lift works. Looks like some Friday night engineering. Interesting capture.

I never knew such a device existed. I've seen plenty of locks in my time and gone through a lot of them but I've never come across anything like this by the side of the canal! Clever people those Victorians, weren't they.
