That's because these are some sort of Globe Artichoke. They are a type of thistle where the flower head is edible.
This picture was taken on the first outing with my new 55-200mm lens.

Good post Steve. I think I would have liked it better had you just had one of them in frame. They are unlike any artichokes I have seen. Great texture.

I think this is one of your best to date Steve, the clarity on the closest one is terrific and that background is superb. Makes for a very bright and arresting image. I think I'm with Tick on having two in the frame though - I find the fact that the one on the left is so out of focus a bit distracting. But I'm not knocking it, this is good.
