Antony Gormley is the most well known living British sculptor. He is most famously known for his work "The Angel Of The North" which is probably Britain's best known sculpture after Nelson's Column. His work, Another Place, consists of 100 life-sized cast iron statues( cast from his own body) placed over a 3km long by 1km wide stretch of beach. They are so placed that at low tide all or nearly all the statues are exposed but at high tide most are submerged.

Another Place was initially intended to be installed at Crosby Beach, Merseyside (immediately opposite New Brighton at the mouth of The River Mersey) from July 2005 to November 2006 and then move to New York. However, the work proved so popular that Antony Gormley himself said that he wanted the work to stay permanently at Crosby. This caused some controversy as, of course, it had to be paid for, but all difficulties have been overcome and the work is staying permanently on Crosby Beach.

Nice shot, the colours seem to make the mood, and getting the statues lined up in the distance like this for it works well. Thnx for the background too, helps to understand the piece.

Truly amazing image, Steve -- and a memorable one.

I quite concur with Wings on your careful composition. The three statues lead me to the wind turbines off along the hazy horizon -- mystical, fascinating.

The repetition of the horizon's misty gray blue striping in between the golden sandbars and the blue splashes on the statue closest to the camera made me assume at first this was computer generated art -- just too perfect a palette! The oranges of the statues and the golds and browns of the sands are perfect, too.

A very interesting image and well shot to give us good feel of the exhibit when only seeing just a glimpse. Thanks, too, for the links.

Like this one a lot Steve. There's lots of interest from the way you've placed the figures in the frame, the different coloured horizontal bands and the wind turbines in the mist. I'm tempted to say it's one of your best to date. Mind you, this one could have done with some suntan lotion.....

I would hate to be swimming when they are submerged and bump into one of the men. It would scare the trunks right off me. What a great shot and the wind turbines make it look like something on another planet. Good post Mulder.

I am gald it is staying - and I like it (them)much more than the Angel - I could never understand why one million pounds was used to create such a monstrosity - but that is just my opinion.
This guy looks as though he has been somewhere other than Crosby - a bit of the old sunburn. :)
Its quite a surreal looking image, you have composed it well - well done

I saw this in the vb Steve, & when I saw the wind turbines I was pretty certain it was yours. :o)

It got a ten from me but I don't like his Angel of the North the arms are too mechanical for my tastes.
This is a surreal photo, & I gave it a ten.

Thats amazing. I had no idea that he had done more work. I have seen the Angel of the North only a few times but i find these statues very intruiging. How very clever. I love your composition of them as well, especially with the wind turbines in the background. Great shot!!

OMG Just now I noticed the feminine line of the person's body ...
Only after I read the Phil's [gonegidital] comment I came to notice the mechanical quality and feminine quantity around the hips - so to say .... LOL

My gosh, this is interesting, but also looks a bit 'scarey' to me. Thinking of them being submerged when the tide is high...wow....the artwork is just magnificent. Thank you for letting us in on all the info about this area...great stuff. V

I looked up the Angel of the NOrth, and don't care for it myself, but I think these hundred figures have quite an impact on our minds. I feel the loneliness, the solitude, and the searching as they peer out over the sea. I wish there were things like this in America. It would give people something to dream about, to think on, and to just ponder on. Thank you so much for all these photos, they are very special. Verena
