The memorial on the left of this image is found at the edge of the pathway leading to the main entrance of Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. It is by the railings that overlook St James' Cemetery, on the right of the image, which is quite a distance below.

Sergeant A.H.L. Richardson, originally from Southport on Merseyside, but who emigrated to Canada, was awarded his Victoria Cross for an act of supreme valour during The Boer War. He was a member of The North-West Mounted Police both before and after the war.

The Victoria Cross is Britain's highest military decoration awarded for valour "...in the face of the enemy." Only 1,357 have been awarded since they were introduced in 1856.

Think a lot of attention was paid in the papers when Sergeant Richardson got in july 1900 the Victoria Cross. Now he's almost forgotten. Only a small memorial remembers us to his brave courage. This post shows that everything in this world is relative. Therefore a very interesting (but good as well) post Steve.

Sergeant Richardson must have been a brave man.

Good old Winston Churchill saw action in the Boer war as a journalist. :o)

However it is a war Britain should be ashamed of. The British troops burnt crops, farms, & civilian buildings. Then they ushered women, children, & the old into tented concentration camps without sanitation which led to many unpleasant civilian deaths. The partisans running a guerilla war against the British were simply starved into submission, some historians even suggest it gave adolf hitler ideas !!

Big brother's watching you :o) A mistreated dog should try to leave a deposit on their masters best carpet, after all it's important to establish who's boss ... Welcome to the last resort. :o)

Nice to see a tribute to a hero from another country. I only hear of the American heroes. Very nice picture, Steve.

I like the balance of the stone on one side and the green-lawned cemetery below... Phil's comment reminds me of how my country treated Native Americans... In all of us there's both darkness and light.

A very thoughtful post Steve, it's always sobering to think of the people who've made the ultimate sacrifice far away from home.
