They're always looking for food, and always a picture opportunity. Anything that's on the move or pointing in a direction needs much more space in front of it than behind. A viewers eyes tend to follow the direction of travel or gaze, which immediately takes them out of the picture. Generally the space ratio is 2/3rds space towards the direction of travel and 1/3rd behind the subject material. It's not always possible with grab shots to get the recommended ratio, but even a slightly greater space in front is improvement.
