Rusty on left and sorry for blurry Eddy! But I did not have a better picture on hand. Last Monday I heard a car out front go by and hit something in the road. I did not think much of it at first but when I ran out I found Eddy laying on the side of the road Gasping. He died right in front of me. I could not find our Golden Lab Rusty anywhere so my wife took off in the car looking for him.Right after she left I head him moaning across the street from me. I ran over there to find him laying there looking at me with those sad eyes! I had just a couple seconds to pet him and then he passed. Its a hard thing to wake up four kids and have to tell them news like this! It was devastating for them.Pets become so much a part of the family that when you lose them its like losing loved ones. The car that hit them never stopped but I have half of the cars front end so maybe one day I can find the guy! Anyway thanks so much for looking.

I am so-o-o-o sorry for you and your family's loss. And a lesson for all of us who so love our animals...take photos of them, just like you would your children. Thank you for reminding me to take more time to photograph the 'others' that I love.

Two beauties, black and white... but really sad. The pets become part of the family and we are very sad when we loose them. Really sad story, but nice photos, Paul. My sympathy.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. It is very hard to lose a loved one. Hope that you catch the guy. In my opinion, people who do this or abuse animals should get the same treatment in return.

I'm sooo sorry to hear this Paul.......such a tragedy to lose 2 close friends like this. I'm late in telling you so but did not see this until now. Lost a few dogs myself (beagles) and it's very rough. Get another one would be my suggestion after things settle down. Many good dogs out there that need a home.

Paul, we lost the best dog I've ever had (and I'm on number 36 and 37 right now) about 14 years ago, at age 3, to a collapsed back (at the time, the surgery for it was far outside our ability to pay and had only a 20% success rate), so we couldn't let her suffer. I was unable, however, to be in that room when she went to sleep (we were all too broken up) and I've regretted it ever since. The border collie I had before the two I have now developed cancer and this time I was there, looking in her eyes and comforting her as she died. Your two fur-faces obviously meant the world to your family and if there is a silver lining, as Diane said, it is that they saw a loving face before they passed, probably easing their pain a little. As for the person who did this, don't let it burn away at you too much. That person doesn't deserve your full attention. They'll find that what goes around, comes around. It took us about 6 months of an empty, quiet house to go looking for a dog and found two terrific ones. I highly recommend it, particularly since your children are still young.

Oh Paul...just came across this while perusing your gallery...though it's been a year since this happened I must extend my sincerest condolences...such a loss and sad story...I am an avid animal lover and this kind of thing is so heartbreaking...especially to watch them pass, as has also happened to me with a couple of cats over the years...I do hope their passing was fairly quick and I am glad to hear you were there to comfort them in their final moments...did you ever catch the guy?

In your light I learn how to love. In your beauty, how to make poems. You dance inside my chest, where no one sees you, but sometimes I do, and that sight becomes this art. ~Rumi~
