~~ Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms ~~

I kissed her and saw that her eyes were shut. I kissed both her shut eyes. I thought she was probably a little crazy. It was all right if she was. I did not care what I was getting into. This was better than going every evening to the house for officers where the girls climbed all over you and put your cap on backwards as a sign of affection between their trips upstairs with other officers."

"I went out the door and suddenly I felt lonely and empty. I had treated seeing Catherine very lightly. I had gotten somewhat drunk and had nearly forgotten to come but when I could not see her there I was feeling lonely and hollow."

"There were troops on this road and motor trucks and mules with mountain guns and as we went down, keeping to one side, and across, under a hill beyond the river, the broken houses of the little town that was to be taken."

"You do. What you tell me about in the nights. That is not love. That is only passion and lust. When you love you wish to do things for. You wish to sacrifice for. You wish to serve."

"In September the first cool nights came, then the days were cool and the leaves on the trees in the park began to turn color and we knew the summer was gone."

"Often a man wishes to be alone and a girl wishes to be alone too and if they love each other they are jealous of that in each other, but I can truly say we never felt that. We could feel alone when we were together, alone against the others. It has only happened to me like that once."

John - A wonderful photo evoking a tranquil mood; the fallen leaves and autumn colors on the trees, a dark bridge with a dash of light on it, with a path leading to unknown places. Beautiful! Thad

It pays to guard a bridge this beautiful Shads. I love the title and the dark shadows are really a statement about Hemingway. Was he ever understood? I don't think he gave anyone the chance. He was my favorite. The scene does make me think of him.

---The Sun Also Rises--Ernest Hemingway---
They go out for dinner, and Jake drinks a lot. Brett tells him he doesn't have to get drunk, but Jake isn't so sure. Jake suggests a ride around Madrid. They get into a taxi, and Brett sits close to Jake. Jake puts his arm around her. It is very cozy, and Brett remarks on how much fun they could have had together. Jake, who has seen how Brett treats those she loves, answers her:

"'Yes....Isn't it pretty to think so?'"

A really lovely fall image, John. I like the shadows. I really got into your Hemingway sampling. I never read anything by him I'm sorry to say, but it is apparent that I would have liked him from what I read above. His thoughts just seem to flow from his mind to his pen, uninterrupted.

Bravo bravo bravo JOhn...for posting what Hemingway wrote!! How beautiful that was, I got shivers down my spine, and felt my heart quicken and I got all teary eyed! If only I could write like that. The passion he had with his words are like the passion this bridge and the surrounding shadows and play of sunlight give! I can image the peace and the scents in that forested area, and a couple walking, stopping on the bridge, giving a sweet kiss, never saying a word, but then walking farther. You have given us a most wonderful picture all the way around. Thank you John. Thank you. Verena

I love Hemingway, I read For Whom the Bell tolls this year and was blown away. Nice shot John, the light on the leaves is especially good.
