Carnegie Free Library

quickshot's picture, Free Library, inspired me to go deeply into my long lost folders to look for a picture of a similar library. I found my, not nearly well captured prize, of my childhood memory from Bellefontaine, Ohio.

I took this picture of the Carnegie Free Library on July 14, 2003. I had spent many hours during my youth in this 1905 building.

Later in life, I remember watching, "Something Evil This Way Comes," the 1983 horror film starring Jason Robards and thinking that the library in the movie was just like the one I remembered in Bellefontaine.

By the way, back when I lived in Bellefontaine, there was a bakery next door to the library and a Murphy's Five and Dime across the street. Murphy's had a fountain and the best milk shakes and sodas in the world. My dog waited for me by the door. It was paradise to a ten year old.

I wish I was a Glow Worm, a Glow Worm's never glum, 'cause how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?

A fine old building and an interesting narrative John.

Mr Carnegie certainly got around the world and we have much to thank him for! There were eighteen Carnegie libraries founded in New Zealand opened between 1908 and 1916. I have seen some of these buildings (some now being used for other purposes) without realizing their history.

It is admirable that many of these NZ libraries were in smaller rural areas.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Your almost lost image of this more than one century old library is accompanied by a very good narrative, John.
Brings back some (fond) memories of your childhood days. So worth to keep it to be cherished again.

Thanks for this interesting post, my friend!

This is a grand and historic building. Libraries used to be such great places for kids to hang out in...I spent a lot of time in libraries, myself. From your narrative, Bellefontaine sounds like an idyllic Midwestern town.
