John, I think that this 'critter' is wearing a somewhat frightening mask. If not, it's in a bad mood. I think that its wink isn't meant to be a jolly one, 😁 !

It appears to be a unique version of the Aztec stone god Tezcatlipoca (pron. tess-cat-lee-po-cah), whose name means "Smoking Mirror", was their god of night and sorcery. While appearing a bit fearful, I'm thinking that "Smoking Mirror" could apply to a sense of mysticism and having a joke at one's expense, hence the wink.
