Not a great shot but I wanted to share this bit of history with yall...This is the famous Rose Window of Mission San Jose. Its said that no one knows why it is called "the Rose Window". Some speculate that it may be due to its baroque beauty and the fact that the window is tied to many San Antonio legends. Many believe that the artistry lavished on this window in the church wall may have attributed to it serving as a portal to important events. Such as on the feast day of Saint Rose when a priest displayed the Eurcharist to the congregation gathered outside. However, church records are silent as to the window's true purpose and those who created it. The ornate carvings and Rose Window helped San Jose to earn its status as "Queen of the Missions". Over one million dollars went into the recent renovation of this window, which is the reason the artwork is now a different color that the church wall.

Whoa, a million dollars to refurbish this window! Thanks so much for the history. You wrote it so well. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words and in this case the window is worth a thousand thousand. It is lovely though.

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

Fascinating history, intriguing carving. And perhaps there is yet another puzzle here...if this is a window, why is there a balcony?
