This time another aspect of 'old' Middelburg, the Netherlans: a picture of the windmill 'De Hoop' (The Hope) standing at the Vlissings Bolwerk ('Bolwerk' is a kind of fortification).
Cornelius, this is a wonderful image of a Dutch windmill, and it's unusual to see one so close to other buildings. Super contrast, colour and clarity. A really lovely photo!!
Beautiful windmill in Middelburg. It is a complete other type mill. Now you what kind of type it is? We have there nevertheless a lot in the Netherlands. Cornelius you must at Paul Gerritsen look at which have made a lot of beautiful photograph of mills. By means of Wallpaper Search it goes easiest.

Wil, let me try to give you the answers. 'De Hoop' is called the 'thickest' mill in Zeeland (province of the Netherlands) as it has very thick walls. The mill was built in 1735 -1736 and caught fire in 1753. Because of its thick walls, only the top of the mill had to be rebuilt. That was done in 1755. 'De Hoop' is a 'stellingmolen' type mill. A 'stellingmolen' was built in the inner town and must be, therefore, pretty high to catch enough wind. De mill was used to grind wheat, is no longer in use but capable to grind again. About the (mill) photographs of Paul Gerritsen, I like to say this: I've seen all the photographs of Paul at the Caedes site. His photographs, including his photographs of mills, are excellent. Wish I had a part of his experience and a better camera than I have now. Thanks anyhow, Wil for your nice comment.
