In the time that Veere, the Netherlands, was connected to 'open sea' (till 1961), the harbour was used as harbour for fishing vessels. In 1961 the 'Veerse Gat Dam' was built as part of a project to protect the provinces of Zeeland and South-Holland against a potential disaster (called 'Deltaplan'). From that time on the 'Veerse Gat' (Strait of Veere) became the 'Lake of Veere' and this fishing harbour became yacht haven.
