Today I'll start a new series, called 'Zeeland Maritime'. It will show some different maritime aspects of Zeeland, a province of the Netherlands. Hope you'll enjoy it. This image shows fishingboats from Arnemuiden (ARM) and Flushing (VLI) in the Innner-harbour of Flushing. The Arnemuiden vessels are identical to each other. In nautical terms such vessels are called 'sisterships'. I will call them, however, 'twins'.

Well as a mariner which I see from your profile Cornelius, it will be very interesting to see your photographs of ships and boats! I like this one very much! I wonder why ships are always female! :) Patti

Wonderful vessels! They look so robust and safe and well kept! This is a wonderfully clear photograph, with great colour and excellent exposure! I also love boats and ships (but I think you guessed that already! lol) - thank you for your wonderful photos and great descriptions.

Rijk aan kleur en goed gekadreerde foto , Cornelius.Als ik Arnemuiden zie moet ik onbewust aan een Nederlands liedje denken ; iets met een klok of zo (het is al zo lang geleden dat ik het gehoord heb).

John and Hubert,
It's a sad song often sung by the fishermen of Arnemuiden during and after WW II when a Arnemuiden fishingboat was hit by a mine and never came back.

The first couplet reads:

Als de klok van Arnemuiden
'welkom thuis' voor ons zal luiden,
wordt de vreugde soms vermengd met droefenis
als een schip op zee gebleven is.

A 'free' translation in English is:

When the bells of Arnemuiden
'welcome home' for us are ringing,
sometimes happiness is mixed with sadness
when a ship and its crew found their rest at sea
